Northampton Tourist Information
Northampton is a large market town and the county town of Northamptonshire. It is in the East Midlands region England, situated 108 km north of London on the River Nene.
During the 11th century the Normans built town walls and a large market grew under the direction of Senlis Earl Norman. Northampton later grew rapidly at the time of the Normans with the population reaching 1500 inhabitants.
The city experienced rapid growth when the new houses were built in housing estates in the early 20th century and by 1961 the population had risen to 100,000. Northampton Development Corporation was created to increase the size of the city, targeting a population of 230,000 are estimated to occur in 1981. But somehow so the real growth was much slower than they had envisaged perhaps due to the emergence of its neighbor the new city of Milton Keynes.
Northampton is famous Rugby, Cricket and Football. The football league club Northampton Town, also known as the shoe, due to the long association of the city with the manufacturing footwear. Northampton Town play at their new stadium at Sixfields Stadium on the outskirts of the city. This stage has both a track and football field are adjacent to each other. Northampton is today better known for its Rugby team is known as Northampton Saints. " Probably his best moment was when he won the European Cup in 2000 at Twickenham Stadium, beating his opponent 9-8 Munster.
One of the main attractions are "Cottesbrooke Hall and Gardens" This is a fine manor house was built in 1702 with the "Arts and Crafts garden" which was added in 1930. The garden is known as the patron Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. Althorp is pronounced as "All – Thorp" is the Spencer family estate. Princess Diana grew up there and his brother Earl Spencer now the lives of their and manages the farm.
The house was originally red brick, and later, but in the 18th century many changes were made when Henry Holland was paid a huge commitment to the task. Kelmarsh hall is a 18th century house that is built in a beautiful set of romantic gardens. It is wonderful place to be when the garden is open to the public. Owing to the wide Kelmarsh is very attractive park that is used for outdoor events, attractions and shows.
Northampton is near the joints 15, 15a, 16 of the M1 motorway. The two A45 and A43 motorways passing through the cities. The A45 runs east of Birmingham and Coventry Rugby ignored. The A14 runs all the way to the port of Felixstowe.
In addition to the great road connections Northampton has direct rail connections to London (Euston) and Birmingham. You can also obtain access to trains to Liverpool, Manchester, North Wales, Crewe, Glasgow and the Lake District all the main West Coast.
