Showed two separate events Once again recently how incredibly impressive our young women in the U.S. may BeOne an example of pure sportsmanship at its best, and another example of pure desire, determination and substance.

The first event occurred in the Washington Class 4A State Girls Track and Field Championship Meet at Pasco, and operation of the 3,200-meter race Nicole Cochran, Bellarmine Prep outstanding middle distance runner.

Cochran won the event in 10:36, beating Andrea Shadlen Nelson Park for 3 seconds. Thirty minutes later, race officials disqualified Cochran, a decision that Harvard row fate befell three consecutive steps in the street adjacent to his. Bellarmine Prep coach Matt Ellis called on the offense, but his appeal was rejected.

The offense occurred on the first day of the meeting, and Cochran was visibly upset because he knew he did not commit the offense. In addition, Cochran was the champion of State that defends having won both the 1,600 and 3,200 titles as a junior.

Never thought after the crushing news, and the sheer injustice of it all. On the second day of competition, Cochran ran the 1,600 and was shot on the last lap when Smollack Mietra Oak Harbor kicked off the last curve win in 4:56.44. Cochran finished fourth.

Later in the afternoon, Cochran ran the 800 meters and finished last in 2:24.40. "I simply not be with them, and kind of gave up the 450 meters, "said a dejected Cochran.

Despite losing Cochran points, his teammates are rightly outraged and rose to the occasion by winning the team title with 76.5 points to second place from Gig Harbor 65.

"I gave a major effort in 3200, "said Cochran," and then there was the emotional after sitting here for an hour while you have the 3200 out figures, which was unfortunate because I know I was wrong and not penalized for it. "

In a show of pure sportsmanship, when the official race winner of 3200 Andrea Nelson was awarded his first medal on the podium, who moments later gave the first-place medal to Cochran. Sarah Redmond Mr. Nelson continued to his medal second place, and the other medal winners followed suit.

"It gave me chills," Cochran said. "Shows how much respect runners background have for each other. "

And now the story after the story: Ten days after the eventful evening, Activities Association Washington Interscholastic reinstated Cochran as the legitimate winner, reversing a rules infraction charge made by race officials.

Micro Colbrese, director WIAA executive, video review that showed the race was his teammate Cochran, who ran from the street, and that the staff report has also identified the issue as back in round 7, when the offense actually occurred on lap 6. So much for that effort failed officiating.

The officials were wrong on the day of the race, but also were absolutely sure they were right and also in charge of race day. The cat mew and dog will have its day (from Shakespeare's Hamlet, Act 5, Scene 1, which means "a person given moment of glory is inevitable), or, as I like to say: "right at will."

The second step in the Texas 1A Girls State Track & Field Championship Meet at Austin, where Rochelle High School won the team title. So what is so unusual, you ask? Only this: Rochelle exactly an athlete qualified for the state competition, and won the state title for his team by herself.

Meet Bonnie Richardson, a study in desire, determination and substance as any other track girl and athlete in the history of Texas high school.

Richardson, whose middle name could be the talent, spent Friday winning the high jump of 5 feet 5 inches, placed second in the long jump at 18-7 and third in the disc 121-0.

On Saturday, Richardson walked calmly on the subject in the sweltering high-90-degree heat of Texas and promptly won the 200 meter dash in 25.03 and monitoring efforts for nearly pulling a huge upset in the 100 before finishing second in 12.19 for the defending champion Kendra Coleman of Santa Ana

"Kendra and I have been struggling all year," said Richardson. "I was surprised stayed with her. I thought it was not so fast. "Yes, Bonnie Richardson, who are quick apparently that.

So did Richardson steal the show in Texas? No, she just won the state title team itself. Officials of the University Interscholastic League could not remember a girl who will never win a state team title by herself.

It happened before in the state championship meet with the boys when former Bear and Pittsburgh Steeler Frank Pollard Balyor was done for the Meridian School Highs in the 1970s, said UIL Athletics Director Charles Breithaupt.

Many outstanding girls athletes have dominated state meets, but few who cross the sprint field events with Richardson's success, said Beithaupt. "The way we did is really impressive." This is, of course, what we thought was there to see what happens.

And the kicker? Rochelle High School turns out that not even a track for practice on. When Richardson was asked how her train, she jokingly replied: "Watch out for potholes," adding: "We have a track about 10 miles by road and train there usually. "

Richardson's coach, Jym Dennis, suspected she could do something special in the state meet, but wisely stayed quiet, not wanting to put any pressure on your athlete award. Last year, Richardson won the state title in long jump but did not medal in high jump and discus.

And the greatest fortune for Rochelle High School? Bonnie Richardson is a junior.

Richardson also competing in the tennis team Rochelle, and led the basketball team to the semifinals Rochelle state last season.

"I like to play football if my parents left me, "Richardson said, adding" Not quarterback. Defense. "Sounds like my kind of girlspunky, competitive and willing to resolve all issues in the field.

Lou Holtz, one of the legendary college football coaches, was famous for many quotes, including this: "When all is said and done, is more said than done. "Somehow, I think Lou Holtz would have been a huge fan of Bonnie Richardson, and their extraordinary effort on that hot afternoon in Texas, when she gave itself a state title for Rochelle High School.

And there you have it: Nicole Cochran, all girls medals on the podium for the ceremony of 3200 meters, Cochran teammates, and Bonnie Richardson, all young ordinary women who did extraordinary things because they could and would.
