Vermont Academy (aka VA) is an American mixed boarding / day school and college preparatory school for grades nine through twelve and accepting offers students seeking post-graduate year. Founded in 1876, is located in Saxtons River, Vermont. The school is mixed, college preparatory, with a 515-acre campus. There are 228 students from 30 states and 12 countries (46 international students – 20%).
History
The school was founded in 1876. [Citation needed]
In 1934 the school at the edge of bankruptcy, Dartmouth College President Ernest Martin Hopkins recommends a Dartmouth graduate rate for the post of director of Vermont Academy. Laurence G. Leavitt was its director for 25 years, during which time enrollment doubled, retired debt of the school and made many improvements to the school campus.

The school offers 19 interscholastic sports: Alpine Skiing, Basketball, Dance, Football, Golf, lacrosse, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, softball, track, baseball, cross country, equestrian, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, mountain biking, ski jumping, soccer and tennis.

The school is part of the New England Council School High Athletic.
There has been a rivalry between the school and the other New England preparatory schools, especially with its close neighbor, Kimball Union Academy.
