East Carolina University
The East Carolina Pirates sports teams are representing East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The Pirates compete in Conference USA NCAA Division 1, along with Rice University, the University of Houston, Tulane University, the University of Tulsa, University Southern Methodist University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Memphis, Marshall University, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Central Florida. The conference is divided into two divisions, East Carolina competing in the Division 6 team in the East.
While that the school is not well known for his athletic prowess, has produced a number of conference championships and appearances in the National Finals. The baseball team mens has enjoyed the most successful of any of the divisions of the schools, winning 12 regular-season titles and 10 conference championships, and appearing in the NCAA tournament 22 times. The nickname comes from the Pirates of the location states along the east coast of the United States. The East Carolina football enjoyed a good deal success in 2008, winning the conference championship after a drought of 32 years, and played in a bowl game for the third consecutive year, losing Kentucky 25-19, despite having a 16-3 edge at halftime. It was a disappointing end to the year for the team, though one that has them optimistic about the future after the best third straight season. The football team plays its home games at the 43,000-seat Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
East Carolina has devoted more 100 players in the Hall of Fame and to retire jersey numbers of more than half a dozen players. Featured athletes, coming from the East Carolina include John Jett, Keith Leclair, David Garrard, Pat Watkins and Dave Alexander. And while the wrestling entertainment industry straddles the line between being considered fantasy sports and said WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and his wife Linda, the current CEO, if the WWE, both graduates of East Carolina also, degrees in business.
Like Colorado, East Carolina also shoot a cannon to mean score plays during their football games, the barrel with a clear relationship with the nickname of Pirates. East Carolina has many other traditions that surround the sports teams that connect Pirates with his name.
