Jason Smith Jason Begg Begg-Smith: Mogul skiing star capture the maximum winter sports awards
Dale Begg-Smith is the Ski and Snowboard Australia Snowsports Athlete of the Year 2004/05. The annual awards were announced at a gala dinner at the Hotel Sofitel, Melbourne, Saturday 30 April.
The competition for the award of the evening was very tight, with Begg-Smith and aerials skier Lydia Ierodiaconou – both rated number two in the world – the main contenders.
At the end of the award was 20 years old, Begg-Smith, as well as finishing runner up in the last World Cup season also claimed a bronze medal at the world championships.
He had started the season ranked 18 in the world, with only 13 World Cup events under his belt, so his rise to world number two has been one of the fastest in the history of sport.
Ierodiaconou won the Best Achievement award of the year for back to back gold medals at Mt Buller in September.
Halfpipe snowboarding star Torah Bright won the Junior Athlete of the Year, while Begg-Smith to coach Steve Desovich was named Coach of the Year.
Media Award in the category, Herald Sun photographer Trevor Pinder won the Best Cinematography the Year for his action shots of Mt Buller in Ierodiaconou.
